There is always a theme (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/?p=679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gravity Falls<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/?p=715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yokai Watch<\/a>, Warrior cats, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/?p=742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Animal Crossing<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/?p=793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dream SMP<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/?p=817\" target=\"_blank\">FNAF<\/a>)and this year it&#8217;s South Park. I don&#8217;t know if letting my 15 yo be into South Park makes me a cool dad or a bad dad. It&#8217;s a very thin line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year I learn a lesson and the lesson I learned last year is that I am running out of &#8220;kid friendly&#8221; puzzles. So this year I leaned into transparencies to create some new puzzles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I usually plan the game out in Paper by 53 but this year I used Miro. There was a transparency with blacked out lines to place over the initial intro letter to reveal the first clue. This led the players to the bathroom closet, where the key to the first box was located. The first box had 2 puzzles to start the divergent paths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Path 1-1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first box was another transparency with seemingly random numbers on it. However, when overlayed with one of the many pictures hung in the room, a clue became apparent for South Park fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/puzzle_manbearpig-8x10-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/puzzle_manbearpig-8x10-1-1024x819.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-872\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/puzzle_manbearpig-8x10-1-1024x819.png 1024w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/puzzle_manbearpig-8x10-1-300x240.png 300w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/puzzle_manbearpig-8x10-1-768x614.png 768w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/puzzle_manbearpig-8x10-1.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows Manbearpig is the greatest threat to mankind, so clearly the next clue was 419. So the nearby Guitar Hero controller did not set off alarm bells for players at first. Eventually someone recognized the layout and figured out to use the count of &#8220;notes&#8221; and map them to the colors of the fret buttons. Now the players needed to find a 4-number, colored lock to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Path 1-2 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a simple Pigpen cipher but I hid the key on one of the posters with blacklight pen (didn&#8217;t get a picture, unfortunately).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The code is &#8220;drugs are bad&#8221; so player must fill in the last word, which is &#8220;Mkay&#8221;. STAN! Following the possible path Mr. Hanky can move in a straight line creates a set of directions for players to enter into a directional lock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mrhanky-path-puzzle-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mrhanky-path-puzzle-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-878\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mrhanky-path-puzzle-1.png 600w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mrhanky-path-puzzle-1-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Path 2-3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This box contained a zigzag cipher which gave the clue &#8220;BUTTERS BULLSEYE&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bullseye.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"210\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bullseye.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-879\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bullseye.png 525w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bullseye-300x120.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This led players to a hidden dartboard with a giant head of Butters covering the dartboard. Players were challenged to hit a number of targets drawn on the front of poor Butter face (oh hamburgers). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/butters_face.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/butters_face.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-884\" style=\"width:312px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/butters_face.png 450w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/butters_face-300x300.png 300w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/butters_face-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it a good idea to throw darts at a child&#8217;s birthday party? Probably not but I always try to work some kind of physical test of skill into the game. I also cordoned the area off, so no one could go into this area unescorted by me until this challenge was completed. (again, no photos. I was too focused on safety)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once all the targets were hit, player could approach and see some of the targets were specially marked and those marks aligned with numbers of the dartboard. This made another 3-number code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Path 1-4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the directional lock opened, this box contained another code that was decodable with a code wheel in the room that was driving the kids nuts the whole time. The finally found the puzzle to use it with. This code was &#8220;Secret Room Tee Hee Hee&#8221;. This code was a nod to &#8220;Cupid Cartman&#8221;, one of my kid&#8217;s favorite bits from South Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a legit secret room in my basement and now the kids have to search the secret room for a tiny Cupid Cartman I had made and hid. This contained a colored key for the final lock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Path 2-4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This box contained a bunch of Popsicle sticks with seemingly random letter on them. Arranging the Popsicle sticks correctly gave the clue of &#8220;Green hat needs cuddles.&#8221; The stuffed Kyle given at the beginning of the hunt was wearing a little bracelet. My youngest REALLY wanted to help make puzzles, so I leveraged her jewelry-making skills and she made a bracelet with different counts of beads for the last 4-number lock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The Last Boxes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each path&#8217;s final box contained a small transparency with lines on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3449.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"965\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3449.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-880\" style=\"width:391px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3449.jpeg 710w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3449-221x300.jpeg 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, they seem to mean nothing but combine them together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3450.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"751\" height=\"636\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3450.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-881\" style=\"width:436px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3450.jpeg 751w, http:\/\/blog.bulletpattern.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_3450-300x254.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their first instinct was to revisit the stuffed Kenny for a clue but no luck there. How else can they kill Kenny? Remember the balloons I mentioned before? Popping the Kenny balloons revealed a couple of small, colored keys that were required final box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cartman&#8217;s final letter took defeat gracefully, as he always does, and resigned that the birthday kid had earned their cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, the family went all out on food and cake, making an amazing spread of snacks.
